Extruded Framing Detail
Porch and Patio Aluminum Screen Wall Kits
Extruded aluminum framing form the perimeter of all openings that you wish to screen. You will receive 16' and 20' lengths of material. All material is extruded aluminum, and will be supplied in up to 4 different profiles depending on your application. You will be cutting both the vertical and horizontal profiles from these 16' & 20'lengths, and screwing them together.
Our complete DIY kits are supplied with everything 'internal' to the kit including all the screws, mullion clips, spline, screening and weather-stripping required for your application...even touch up paint. Enjoy outdoor gatherings or just relax in your favorite lounge chair on a hot summer day without worrying about pesky bugs.
Frames are available in 2x2 and 2x3 systems. All parts, which you will cut yourself on site, are screwed together. No plastic pieces. The supplied hardware is extruded aluminum for maximum strength and weather-ability. Details on the systems and components are below.
The details on the extruded aluminum system below is used for both our screen porch systems where a roof isn't needed, as well as our full deck enclosure kits that include insulated patio covers with screen wall systems.
Screen Porch Systems
2" x 2" Extruded Aluminum Screen System
There are two primary choices of extruded frames available for your screen wall kit. The most commonly used system is the 2" x 2" extruded aluminum porch and patio screening system. These frames have a .062" thick aluminum wall making them exceptionally strong and durable when compared to products at your local hardware store. This system uses a round spline (.220) and suitable for openings up to 60" wide x 10' high.

Increasing the size of the frame to the stronger 2" x 3" posts allows you to increase the size of the openings while still maintaining the required wind load rating. They are similar in style and function to the 2x2 system, but the depths of all extrusions is 3". The flat spline system also makes rolling the screen is easier than with the 2x2 system. As an added bonus, the 3" depth makes for a great drink holder! These systems have engineering available, so the preferred choice when a building permit is needed.

U Channels
These are installed first. H123 - 1" x 2" U channels are installed on the top and bottom horizontal surfaces (floor & underside of existing structure) and on all vertical surfaces (house wall or existing posts). Sometimes H124 -2" x 2" U channels are installed on the underside of the existing structure depending on the pitch. The H123 U channel has a .050" wall thickness.
Main Frame
The 2" x 2" frames are used vertically and their spacing is indicated by red squares in your quotation drawing. If there is no kick-plate in your application, you will also be using the 2" x 2" frames as horizontal "chair rails" between the verticals. The H122 mainframe has a .048" wall thickness and the H120 mainframe (for corners) has a .062" wall thickness .

Your wall height is determined by the underside of our insulated roof system the height that you have mounted it on your existing structure. We will suggest a screen panel width of 29" to 60" wide depending on the size of your entire system. We will also lay this out so that the spacing is aesthetically pleasing all the way around. In other words we will avoid having 29" openings on one wall and 42" openings on an adjacent wall. You will receive a drawing from us indicating both 1x2 & 2x2 mainframe placements. You may choose to have as many 3' x 6'8" out-swinging knock down aluminum doors as you deem necessary.
Vertical Supports
These are installed next. The 2" x 2" frames are used vertically and their spacing is indicated by red squares in your quotation drawing. If there is no kick-plate in your application, you will also be using the 2" x 2" frames as horizontal "chair rails" between the verticals. The H122 mainframe has a .048" wall thickness and the H120 mainframe (for corners) has a .062" wall thickness.
Kick Plate
You will need to make a choice of no kick-plates or 18" or 24" kick-plates. With 'no' kick-plate, the horizontal 2x2 that is installed between verticals can be placed at any height you wish. We recommend somewhere below the midpoint to create a clear line of sight for when you are seated in the room.
